Edinburgh International Film Festival reveals 2024 programme
The Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF) returns for its 77th edition from August 15 to 21, 2024, showcasing a diverse array of cinematic works from around the world. Under the new leadership of festival director Paul Ridd and chair Andrew Macdonald, this year’s festival promises an exciting lineup, featuring 37 feature films, 18 of which are world premieres.
Among the highlights are the world premieres of Daisy-May Hudson’s fiction debut "Lollipop," a poignant drama following a young woman’s struggle to regain custody of her children after her release from prison. Another standout is Bryan Carberry’s documentary "Smiles And Kisses You," which delves into the complex relationship between a man and his life-size AI-animated doll, exploring themes of loneliness in the modern age.
Euros Lyn’s black comedy "The Radleys," based on Matt Haig’s novel, is another notable premiere. Starring Damian Lewis, the film tells the story of a seemingly ordinary family hiding a dark secret—they are vampires.
The competition for the prestigious £50,000 Sean Connery Prize for Feature Filmmaking Excellence includes ten films, among them the BFI and BBC Film-backed "Lollipop." The cast features Screen Star of Tomorrow 2023 Posy Sterling. Also competing are Arash Rakhsha’s "All The Mountains Give," Jack King’s "The Ceremony," Mary Jiménez and Bénédicte Liénard’s "Fuga," and Will Seefried’s "Lilies Not For Me."
Out of competition, films such as Polly Steele’s documentary "The Mountain Within Me" and Daniel Reisinger’s romantic comedy "And Mrs" will also premiere. The Midnight Madness strand will feature horror, action, and comedies, including the UK premieres of "Alien: Romulus" and Coralie Fargeat’s "The Substance."
A special showcase, "Lynda Myles Celebrates," will present the world premiere of Axel Cheb Terrab’s "Gala & Kiwi," honoring former EIFF director Lynda Myles.
EIFF director Paul Ridd emphasized the collaborative spirit behind this year’s festival, aiming to provide a platform for a wide range of film work. "Through a spirit of collaboration, passion, and above all teamwork, we have worked to fashion something special out of a shared vision for what we want this historic festival to be going forward," he stated.
The festival will utilize various venues across Edinburgh, including Cameo Cinema, Summerhall, and new locations like 50 George Square, embedding the event within the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
