Angelina Jolie to Receive TIFF Tribute Award in Impact Media at Toronto International Film Festival
Angelina Jolie, the Academy Award-winning actor, director, and humanitarian, will be honored with the TIFF Tribute Award in Impact Media at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). This prestigious award recognizes Jolie's exceptional contributions to cinema that intersect with social impact, solidifying her status as a global humanitarian force. The award will be presented during the TIFF Tribute Awards Gala on September 8 at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto.
Cameron Bailey, CEO of TIFF, expressed his admiration for Jolie’s multifaceted career, noting her enduring commitment to using her platform for positive change. “We’re honored to present her with the 2024 TIFF Tribute Award in Impact Media. This award recognizes her exceptional achievements in filmmaking and her unwavering commitment to positive change,” Bailey said.
Jolie’s return to the 49th edition of TIFF follows her previous successes at the festival, including the critically acclaimed First They Killed My Father (2017), which she wrote and directed, and The Breadwinner (2017), which she executive produced. Her latest film, Without Blood, will have its world premiere at TIFF on the same day she receives the award. The film, based on Alessandro Baricco’s bestselling novel, stars Salma Hayek Pinault and Demián Bichir and explores themes of war, trauma, and healing.
In addition to her film work, Jolie has been a staunch advocate for human rights and environmental conservation for over two decades. She has been involved in numerous global initiatives, including the establishment of the Maddox Foundation in Cambodia, which focuses on conservation, education, and economic development.
The TIFF Tribute Awards, now in its sixth year, serves as the festival’s largest fundraiser, with proceeds supporting the Every Story Fund, dedicated to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the film industry. The event has become a key indicator of awards-season success, with past recipients going on to win major international accolades.
Jolie will be honored alongside a distinguished group of filmmakers and actors, including Amy Adams, Cate Blanchett, and David Cronenberg. The gala will be chaired by Sandra Oh, who serves as the inaugural Honorary Chair of the event.
