Italy’s Corto Condorello Film Festival Offers Distribution on MUBI for Winning Shorts
Rome is gearing up to host Corto Condorello, a premier short film festival aimed at spotlighting young filmmakers under 35 from around the globe. The festival, organized by renowned Italian filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino and Rome’s Piccolo America, invites aspiring directors to submit their works by October 20, 2024, with no fees for registration or entry. This opportunity comes with the chance to win a prestigious prize: distribution of the winning short on the international streaming platform MUBI.
Corto Condorello, running from November 22 to 24 at Cinema Troisi, boasts a high-profile jury that includes esteemed figures from the world of cinema. Among them are actors Willem Dafoe and Debra Winger, model and singer Carla Bruni, and celebrated directors Jan Komasa and Radu Mihaileanu. The jury will be chaired by Paolo Sorrentino, whose directorial achievements include "The Great Beauty" and the recent “Parthenope.” The festival’s top award, the “Golden Condorello,” will be presented to the best short film, accompanied by a distribution deal with MUBI. The platform, known for curating art-house, independent, and international cinema, will stream the winning film for its global audience.
The festival also features an out-of-competition section, the Condorello d’Argento, which awards a €500 voucher for Rome’s historic San Calisto bar, famously featured in Sorrentino’s Oscar-winning “The Great Beauty.” With over 1,300 submissions already received, competition is fierce, but the festival’s focus on diversity and international talent promises a rich array of cinematic voices.
Paolo Sorrentino’s company, Numero 10, partnered with Piccolo America to launch this festival as part of their long-standing commitment to nurturing new talent. Piccolo America, an organization with deep roots in Rome’s film culture, also operates the city’s largest open-air film festival, Il Cinema in Piazza, and the 24-hour cinema, Cinema Troisi. Their new festival initiative aims to provide a platform for emerging filmmakers, giving them access to a broad audience and industry recognition.
The final awards ceremony will be held on November 24. For those interested in submitting their films, the deadline is fast approaching on October 20, 2024. Registration is free, and submissions can be made via Film Freeway.
