45 European Films from 28 Countries Shortlisted for 2024 European Film Awards in Lucerne
The European Film Academy (EFA) has officially unveiled the complete list of 45 feature films selected for the 2024 European Film Awards. This selection spans 28 European countries, showcasing the diversity and richness of contemporary European cinema. The films were chosen through a rigorous process involving the Academy Board and a panel of invited European experts. The final list includes 16 additional films, expanding on the initial announcement of 29 titles made earlier this year.
This year's European Film Awards ceremony will take place on 7 December 2024 in Lucerne, Switzerland. The selected films are eligible for a range of prestigious awards, including ‘European Film,’ ‘Director,’ ‘Actor,’ ‘Actress,’ ‘Screenwriter,’ and ‘Documentary.’ The nominations will be announced on 5 November, following a voting period in which the 5,000 Academy members will evaluate the entries.
The films are also eligible for Excellence Awards in categories such as ‘Cinematography,’ ‘Editing,’ ‘Production Design,’ and ‘Original Score.’ Unlike the main categories, these technical awards will be decided by a jury of eight representatives from various cinematic disciplines. The selection process aligns with the Academy’s Diversity & Inclusion Standards, ensuring a broad representation of voices and perspectives from across the continent.
Among the films selected are titles from well-known directors like Luca Guadagnino ("Queer") and Mike Leigh ("Hard Truths"), alongside films from emerging talents such as Kurdwin Ayub ("Moon") and Egil Pedersen ("My Fathers’ Daughter"). With productions hailing from countries as varied as Turkey, Romania, Italy, and Iceland, this year's selection highlights the wide-reaching creativity and storytelling prowess found in European cinema.
