“Emilia Pérez” and “The Room Next Door” Lead 2024 European Film Awards Nominations in Switzerland
The European Film Academy has announced the 2024 nominations for the European Film Awards, with Emilia Pérez by Jacques Audiard and The Room Next Door by Pedro Almodóvar emerging as front-runners. Both films lead with four nominations each, including recognition for best European film, best director, best screenwriter, and best actress.
This year’s European Film Awards will take place on December 7 in Lucerne, Switzerland. In a notable change, fifteen films are now vying for the prestigious best European film award—a significant expansion from the previous limit of five entries. This shift follows a recent rule adjustment that opens the category to films already nominated in the documentary and animation sections.
Leading Nominees: "Emilia Pérez" and "The Room Next Door"
Emilia Pérez, Audiard's feature, received nods in four categories: best film, best director, best screenwriter, and best actress for Karla Sofía Gascón. The Room Next Door, directed by Almodóvar, also earned four nominations, with Tilda Swinton contending for best actress alongside Almodóvar’s nominations for best film, director, and screenwriter.
Other Strong Contenders
Another notable film, The Seed of the Sacred Fig, directed by Mohammad Rasoulof, garnered three nominations in the best film, director, and screenwriter categories. Additionally, The Girl With the Needle, directed by Magnus von Horn and Line Langebek, secured three nominations, with actors Trine Dyrholm and Vic Carmen Sonne both competing in the best actress category and a nod for screenwriting.
The Italian film Vermiglio, directed by Maura Delpero and winner of the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival, also features prominently in the nominations, rounding out the diverse group of films competing in the best European film category.
Multiple Nominations Across Various Films
Several films received two nominations each, including The Substance by Coralie Fargeat, Bird by Andrea Arnold, Armand by Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel, and Vermiglio. This wide distribution of nominations underscores the diversity in genre and storytelling in European cinema this year.
