Orwa Nyrabia, Artistic Director of the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), will step down at the end of his term in July 2025. Serving since 2018, Nyrabia has revitalized IDFA with initiatives like the Envision Competition and gender parity efforts. IDFA will begin its search for a new director after the 2024 festival in the Netherlands.

Orwa Nyrabia, the Artistic Director of the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), has announced his departure at the conclusion of his current term in July 2025. This decision marks the end of a transformative seven-year tenure that has left a significant impact on the festival and the global documentary community.

Nyrabia joined IDFA in January 2018 and quickly set about reshaping the festival’s structure, content, and outreach. Among his key achievements are the establishment of the Envision Competition, IDFA On Stage, and the Producers Connection, all of which have become integral to the event. Under his guidance, IDFA also achieved gender parity across its programs and expanded its focus on global representation, fostering a uniquely inclusive environment for filmmakers and audiences.

During his leadership, IDFA navigated the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, adapting to shifting social and political landscapes and the evolving needs of the documentary film industry. Nyrabia also played a crucial role in the establishment of Het Documentaire Paviljoen, a year-round space for documentary culture in the heart of Amsterdam.

Reflecting on his time at IDFA, Nyrabia stated, “I have always seen this great role as an artistic endeavor, as a responsibility much more important and critical than being merely a job. Change is necessary, especially when at the right moment. I am proud of what we have accomplished together.” He expressed optimism for IDFA’s future, emphasizing its dedication to the art of cinema and its role as a vital resource for filmmakers and audiences alike.

Marry de Gaay Fortman, Chair of IDFA’s Supervisory Board, praised Nyrabia’s contributions, noting, “His influence in the artistic field lifted IDFA and has driven the festival as well as the organization to places we never knew they existed. After the 2024 edition, we will begin the process of identifying a new Artistic Director.”

The 2024 edition of IDFA, scheduled from November 14–24, will be the final festival under Nyrabia’s leadership. He will remain in his role until July 1, 2025, ensuring a smooth transition for the organization.
