Lol Crawley Wins Robby Müller Award 2025 at IFFR in the Netherlands
The International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) has announced that Lol Crawley, the British cinematographer behind The Brutalist (2024), will receive the prestigious Robby Müller Award for 2025. The accolade recognizes his unique contribution to visual storytelling, honoring those who create exceptional visual language in their work, in the spirit of the late Dutch cinematographer Robby Müller.
Crawley will be present at IFFR 2025 to deliver an IFFR Talk discussing his extensive career. The festival will also host the Dutch premiere of Brady Corbet’s post-war drama The Brutalist (2024), which showcases Crawley’s acclaimed cinematography.
The jury praised Crawley’s approach to filmmaking, noting that his “camera is dedicated to the story and characters in a way that is both humble and ardent.” They highlighted his ability to adapt dynamically to the environment, creating imagery that aligns with its natural flow rather than restricting it to predefined frames.
This marks the sixth edition of the Robby Müller Award, a collaboration between IFFR, the Netherlands Society of Cinematographers (NSC), and Andrea Müller-Schirmer, Robby Müller’s widow. The annual award honors cinematographers, filmmakers, and visual artists whose work demonstrates extraordinary behind-the-camera artistry.
Last year, the award was given to Belgian cinematographer Grimm Vandekerckhove, following previous recipients including Hélène Louvart, Sayombhu Mukdeeprom, Kelly Reichardt, and Diego Garcia.
