“Anora” and “I Saw the TV Glow” Lead Nominations for 2025 Film Independent Spirit Awards in the US
Film Independent has announced the nominees for the 40th annual Film Independent Spirit Awards, a milestone in the organization’s efforts to support independent artists. The nominations highlight exceptional talent in film and television, recognizing creators who exemplify innovation and diversity in storytelling.
Sean Baker’s "Anora" and Jane Schoenbrun’s "I Saw the TV Glow" lead the film nominations, each earning six nods. The Robert Altman Award was bestowed on "His Three Daughters", directed by Azazel Jacobs, for its outstanding ensemble cast.
"Shōgun" garnered the most TV nominations with five, followed by "Baby Reindeer" and "English Teacher," each with four.
Since its inception, the Spirit Awards has been a cornerstone of Film Independent’s mission, which also includes Artist Development and Project Involve. For the 2025 awards, 46% of nominees are women, and 30% are BIPOC, demonstrating the organization’s ongoing commitment to inclusivity.
The Spirit Awards continues to evolve, having adopted gender-neutral acting categories in 2022. This year’s nominees were selected based on uniqueness of vision, subject matter, and production economy, reflecting the dynamic nature of independent art.
