Berlinale 2025 Celebrates 75 Years with Expanded Venues and Animated Key Visuals
The Berlin International Film Festival, set to take place from February 15 to 25, 2025, will mark its 75th anniversary with a host of new initiatives and an expanded network of venues. The festival, under the direction of Tricia Tuttle, who is taking the helm for the first time, promises to showcase Berlin’s dynamic film heritage and its evolving digital identity.
A Network of Cinematic Experiences
A total of 15 cinemas across Berlin will host screenings, including iconic venues like Berlinale Palast, Zoo Palast, and Delphi Filmpalast. The Berlinale Palast remains the central hub, featuring the Competition, Berlinale Special Galas, and the popular Red Carpet fan area. Additionally, the Stage Bluemax Theater at Marlene-Dietrich-Platz will debut as a premiere venue for the newly launched Perspectives first feature competition.
Berlinale Goes Kiez: A Tribute to Neighbourhood Cinemas
Berlinale Goes Kiez returns, paying homage to Berlin’s cherished neighbourhood cinemas, which serve as cultural hubs for local communities. From February 15 to 21, selected films from the Berlinale program will be screened at seven unique arthouse theatres across Berlin and nearby Potsdam. The series will also include a special screening at the JVA Plötzensee correctional facility, open to external audiences.
Participating cinemas include:
- City Kino Wedding (Wedding) – February 15
- Thalia – Das Programmkino (Potsdam-Babelsberg) – February 16
- KLICK Kino (Charlottenburg) – February 17
- Odeon (Schöneberg) – February 18
- Wolf Kino (Neukölln) – February 19
- Sinema Transtopia (Wedding) – February 20
- Kino im Zeiss-Großplanetarium (Prenzlauer Berg) – February 21
A Time-Themed Key Design
The 75th Berlinale also unveils an animated key visual, marking a shift towards digital-first communication. Created by Berlin-based graphic designer Claudia Schramke, the design centers on the theme of "time," blending a vibrant homage to cinema’s past with a modern, dynamic aesthetic. The animated visuals and poster will be prominently displayed across Berlin starting late January.
This year’s Berlinale design reflects both the festival’s legacy and its commitment to embracing contemporary media trends, setting the stage for an anniversary celebration that bridges tradition and innovation.
The full Berlinale Goes Kiez program and special event admission details will be announced on February 4, 2025. The festival is supported by Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg.
