Annecy 2025 to Spotlight Hungarian Animation and Music Videos in France
The Annecy International Animation Film Festival, one of the world’s premier events for animated cinema, returns to France from June 8 to 14, 2025. The upcoming edition promises an exciting lineup featuring a tribute to Hungarian animation, a celebration of music videos as a dynamic medium, and a milestone anniversary for the International Animation Film Market (Mifa).
Hungarian Animation: A Rich Legacy
Annecy 2025 will delve into Hungary’s long-standing tradition of animation. From the iconic works of Marcell Jankovics, such as "Johnny Corncob" (1973) and "The Son of the White Mare" (1981), to Oscar-winning short "The Fly" by Ferenc Rofusz (1981), Hungarian animation boasts a compelling history.
Marcel Jean, Artistic Delegate of the festival, highlights the cultural dynamism that has defined Hungarian animation over decades:
"Despite political upheavals, the rich history of Hungarian animation has never wavered."
Recent successes, including "27" by Flora Anna Buda and "Amok" by Balázs Turai, will be featured alongside restored classics, thanks to efforts by the Hungarian National Film Institute.
Music Videos: A Canvas for Experimentation
In addition to Hungarian animation, Annecy 2025 will explore music video as a flourishing field of creativity. The medium, which emerged prominently in the 1980s, has offered animators a platform for groundbreaking artistic exploration.
Filmmakers like Michel Gondry, Steve Cutts, and Raman Djafari have used music videos to push boundaries, blending animation with musical storytelling. The festival will revisit key works from these pioneers, demonstrating the evolving intersection of music and animation.
Mifa’s 40th Anniversary
The International Animation Film Market (Mifa), an integral part of Annecy, will mark its 40th anniversary in 2025. Over the years, Mifa has become a vital hub for industry professionals, fostering collaborations and enabling projects to reach global audiences.
This anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect on Mifa’s legacy while looking toward its future. From co-productions to financing and international partnerships, Mifa has played a pivotal role in shaping the animation industry.
Annecy 2024: A Record-Breaking Year
The 2024 edition of the festival saw unprecedented global participation, with over 103 countries represented and 17,400 accreditations. Building on this success, Annecy 2025 promises to be another milestone event for both industry professionals and animation enthusiasts.
Annecy 2025 will be a platform to celebrate past achievements and explore new horizons in animation. With a focus on Hungary, music videos, and Mifa’s landmark anniversary, it offers a rich and diverse experience for all attendees.
