The Annecy Festival in France will welcome Michel Gondry for the first time in 2025, celebrating his groundbreaking contributions to animation and music videos. Gondry, known for films like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Science of Sleep, will receive an Honorary Cristal for his innovative legacy in handcrafted animation and creative storytelling.

The Annecy International Animation Festival, one of the world’s most prestigious animation events, has announced that French filmmaker Michel Gondry will be a guest at its 2025 edition. This marks the first time the director, renowned for his creative storytelling and innovative approach to animation, will attend the festival.

Michel Gondry is widely regarded as a visionary artist whose groundbreaking work has redefined the boundaries of both cinema and music videos. He has collaborated with acclaimed musicians such as Björk, The White Stripes, Steriogram, and Daft Punk, creating visually striking and conceptually inventive music videos that have left an indelible mark on the industry. Marcel Jean, Annecy's artistic delegate, praised Gondry, stating, “Michel Gondry assumes the legacy of Georges Méliès as much as that of Norman McLaren. His boundless creativity and innovative approach have brought hand-crafted animation back into the mainstream, as brilliantly illustrated by The Science of Sleep.”

At Annecy 2025, Gondry will receive the Honorary Cristal, a prestigious accolade recognizing his exceptional contributions to the field of animation. While Gondry’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind became an instant cult classic, and his animated documentary Is the Man Who Is Tall Happy?: An Animated Conversation with Noam Chomsky won the Prix André-Martin in 2014, the Annecy Festival has not had the pleasure of hosting him until now.

The 2025 edition of Annecy will focus on the intersection of animation and music videos, making Gondry’s visit particularly significant. His filmography exemplifies the blending of these two art forms, with a distinctive style that has inspired generations of animators and filmmakers. The festival will also explore Gondry’s creative process, offering audiences a rare glimpse into the mind of the director behind films like Maya, donne-moi un titre.

This recognition by Annecy underscores Gondry’s lasting influence on animation and his ability to bring handcrafted techniques into the spotlight. The Honorary Cristal not only celebrates his achievements but also highlights his role in pushing the boundaries of animation as an art form.
