The Departed

by Martin Scorsese

Irish mob boss Frank Costello has a firm grip on South Boston. One of his loyal followers since his teenage years is Colin Sullivan who, with Costello’s help, graduates from the police academy. As a member of the Massachusetts State Police, Colin climbs the career ladder and is soon part of the Special Investigation Unit – he is a mole in Costello’s service that no one but the two men knows about. Around the same time, police trainee Billy Costigan is given a sensitive assignment by the head of the undercover unit and his right-hand man. Billy’s uncle was a member of the Irish mafia, and this family background makes Billy seem well suited to infiltrate Costello’s organisation. To this end, he is first sent to prison after being dishonourably discharged from the force. Only the two cops know Billy’s true identity. When both the gangsters and the police realise that they have been infiltrated, a desperate race begins for Billy and Colin. Each wants to expose the other while remaining undetected.
