In 1934, Professor Vangengheim was arrested for sabotage and sent to the Gulag on the Solovki Islands. But in his letters to his daughter Eleonora, he continued to pass himself off as a travelling explorer: he sent her herbariums of plants, composed riddles, drew animals and astronomical phenomena.
