The immersive section showcases XR works, including 360° videos, VR, and mixed reality.

The Venice Immersive section for the 81st Venice International Film Festival has revealed its complete lineup, presenting a total of 63 projects from 25 countries. This year's festival will take place from August 28 to September 7, 2024, on the island of Lazzaretto Vecchio, near the Lido di Venezia. Launched in 2017, Venice Immersive represents the first competition and official selection for Extended Reality (XR) works in an A-list festival.

This year’s selection includes 26 projects in competition, comprising 19 world premieres and 7 international premieres, and 30 projects out of competition. The out-of-competition section is divided into "Best of Experiences," featuring 10 projects, and "Best of Worlds," with 20 projects created on the VRChat social platform. Additionally, there are 7 projects developed during the Biennale College Cinema – Immersive workshops.

The Venice Immersive section is entirely devoted to immersive arts and media, encompassing various XR expressions such as 360° videos, virtual and mixed reality, and XR works of any length, including installations, haptics, and virtual worlds. Accredited visitors will have access to all titles in the lineup, and special Venice Immersive accreditation is available for attendees.

The 2024 Venice Immersive Jury will be presided over by Celine Daemen from the Netherlands, a director known for her transdisciplinary art. The jury also includes Marion Burger from France, a production designer with extensive film experience, and Adriaan Lokman from the Netherlands, a creator of cross-media projects. This esteemed panel will award the Venice Immersive Grand Prize, the Special Jury Prize, and the Achievement Prize.

A brief history highlights the festival's early adoption of Virtual Reality, beginning with the development of a VR Theatre in 2016 and the launch of the first VR competition in 2017. Despite challenges posed by the pandemic, which led to the online accessibility of Venice VR Expanded in 2020 and 2021, the section returned in person in 2022 under the new name Venice Immersive.
