Notable directors include Todd Phillips, Pedro Almodovar, Luca Guadagnino, and Pablo Larraín. Angelina Jolie stars as Maria Callas in Larraín's "Maria," while Brad Pitt and George Clooney feature in Jon Watts' "Wolfs." The festival runs from August 28 to September 7, with Isabelle Huppert heading the jury.

The 81st Venice Film Festival, one of the most prestigious events in the global film calendar, has officially revealed its line-up for the 2024 edition. The selection was announced by the festival’s president, Pietrangelo Buttafuoco, and artistic director Alberto Barbera, marking Buttafuoco's debut at the annual press conference since he took over from Roberto Cicutto in October 2023.

This year’s Competition section will see 21 films vying for the coveted Golden Lion. The line-up features an impressive array of internationally acclaimed filmmakers, including Todd Phillips, known for his work on "Joker," who returns with "Joker: Folie A Deux." Pedro Almodovar, a regular at the festival, presents his latest work, "The Room Next Door." Luca Guadagnino will compete with his film "Queer," while Pablo Larraín's "Maria," starring Angelina Jolie as the iconic opera singer Maria Callas, is also among the anticipated titles.

The selection also includes films from Brady Corbet ("The Brutalist"), Justin Kurzel ("The Order"), and Walter Salles ("I’m Still Here"). Emerging filmmakers are also well-represented, with works from Dea Kulumbegashvili ("April"), Athina Rachel Tsangari ("Harvest"), and Yeo Siew Hua ("Stranger Eyes") completing the list.

In addition to the Competition films, the festival will showcase a diverse array of out-of-competition works. The opening film, "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" by Tim Burton, promises to start the festival with flair, while Pupi Avati's "The American Backyard" will close the event.

The festival will also feature TV series by notable directors, such as Alfonso Cuaron’s "Disclaimer," Thomas Vinterberg’s "Families Like Ours," and Joe Wright’s "M - Son of the Century." These series highlight the evolving landscape of storytelling, where television has become a powerful medium for cinematic expression.

Isabelle Huppert, the acclaimed French actress, will preside over the jury, which includes a diverse group of filmmakers and artists, such as James Gray, Andrew Haigh, Agnieszka Holland, Kleber Mendonça Filho, Abderrahmane Sissako, Giuseppe Tornatore, Julia von Heinz, and Zhang Ziyi. The Horizons jury will be led by Debra Granik, known for her focus on independent cinema.

The Venice Critics’ Week and the Giornate degli Autori sections, announced earlier, will also offer a platform for innovative and independent films, further enriching the festival’s diverse offerings.

The 81st Venice Film Festival will run from August 28 to September 7, 2024, continuing its legacy as a crucial venue for filmmakers to showcase their work on an international stage.
