Anima Brussels to Host Futuranima 2025 with Belgian and Global Animation Talent

Futuranima, the professional segment of the Anima Brussels Animation Film Festival, returns from March 3–8, 2025, at Flagey and Marni. Featuring events such as behind-the-scenes looks at "Arcane" season 2 and "Flow," masterclasses by Ankama, and a spotlight on Belgian animation studios, Futuranima is a key international event for animation professionals and students.

The 44th edition of Anima, the International Animation Film Festival of Brussels, is set to run from February 28 to March 9, 2025, with its professional segment, Futuranima, scheduled for March 3–8 at Flagey and Marni. A hub for Belgian and international animation talent, Futuranima will feature masterclasses, work-in-progress showcases, studio presentations, and industry-focused conferences.

Among the standout events, Fortiche Production, the French studio behind the critically acclaimed series Arcane, will share insights into the production of the show's highly anticipated second season. Adapted from the League of Legends universe, Arcane has captivated both fans and critics, and the session promises an exclusive look at its creative process.

Another highlight is the making-of session for Flow, the latest feature by Latvian director Gints Zilbalodis, co-produced by the Brussels-based studio Take Five. This film, praised at Cannes and Annecy, showcases an innovative approach to storytelling and animation, offering a deep dive into the creative journey behind the project.

An exclusive masterclass with Anthony Roux, founder and artistic director of the transmedia studio Ankama, will delve into the studio’s dynamic portfolio, including Wakfu and Dofus. Participants will gain valuable insights into Ankama's evolution and creative strategies, making it a must-attend event for fans and professionals alike.

Exploring gender perspectives in animation, Cécile Noesser, an expert in the field, will present a compelling lecture on the “female gaze” in animated films. Her talk will focus on themes of desire, body representation, and the unique space animation offers female filmmakers, particularly since the 1970s.

Visual artist Raman Djafari, known for his groundbreaking work at the intersection of animation and illustration, will discuss his latest projects. Djafari, who designed the official poster for Anima 2025, continues to push the boundaries of visual storytelling, offering attendees a glimpse into his creative vision.

Additionally, the making-of Quentin Blake’s Box of Treasures, a BBC series co-produced by Belgium’s Creative Conspiracy, will reveal the collaborative effort behind this enchanting adaptation of Blake’s iconic style.

Futuranima will also spotlight Belgian animation studios through its Belgian Animation Rendez-Vous and informal networking events like Brotaru, a showcase of independent video games, and Drink & Draw, an interactive drawing session.

The full Futuranima program will be announced on February 4, 2025. Special accreditations for professionals and students, granting access to most events throughout the festival, will be available starting December 6, 2024, via the official Anima website. Pricing is set at €40 for students and €50 for professionals, with certain exclusions such as opening and closing nights and masterclasses.

Futuranima 2025 is made possible through partnerships with organizations including Amplo, the French Embassy in Belgium, Creative Europe Media Desks, and the Vlaams Audiovisueel Fonds. The event underscores Belgium’s commitment to fostering creativity and innovation in animation.
