The Anima Festival, a premier event celebrating animation in Belgium, has announced that its 2025 edition will open with the world-renowned stop-motion feature "Memoir of a Snail" by Adam Elliot. The festival's 44th edition is scheduled to commence on February 28, 2025, in Brussels, with screenings taking place at Flagey and Marni.

Adam Elliot, an acclaimed Australian filmmaker and animator, is celebrated for his distinctive storytelling, combining dark humor and emotional depth. His debut film, "Harvie Krumpet" (2003), won an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film, marking the beginning of a remarkable career. Elliot's body of work includes the critically acclaimed "Mary & Max" (2009), a poignant tale of an unusual friendship that won the Cristal for Best Feature Film at the Annecy Festival.

"Memoir of a Snail" continues Elliot's exploration of human experiences. The film centers on Grace Pudel, an introverted snail collector who faces life-altering challenges when separated from her twin brother, Gilbert. Amidst her struggles, she finds solace in her friendship with Pinky, an eccentric elderly woman who helps her rediscover joy and resilience. Featuring the voices of Jacki Weaver, Sarah Snook, and musician Nick Cave, the film offers a blend of humor, tenderness, and profound introspection.

The film has already garnered critical acclaim, winning the Cristal for Best Feature Film at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, further cementing Elliot’s reputation as a master storyteller in the realm of stop-motion animation.

Belgian distributor Lumière will bring "Memoir of a Snail" to cinemas starting March 12, 2025. For festival enthusiasts, a Festival Pass offering access to all screenings (excluding masterclasses) is available for €75. The complete Anima 2025 program will be revealed on February 4, 2025.
